trike up a conversation with Jim Jensen, Satcom Direct
CEO and founder, and you will soon hear him talk
about the customer experience. That’s his passion, his
focus and his driving force in building Satcom Direct.
Today, Satcom Direct has 112 employees with offices worldwide and provides approximately 90 percent of the business
aviation market with telephone and Internet services for crew
and passengers. Satcom Direct also provides satcom services for
various government and military branches. And all of this was
accomplished in just less than 20 years while technology continued to rapidly change.
Of course, it was a lot of hard work, but that’s something
Jensen learned as a boy growing up on a farm in Eau Claire, Wis.
When Jensen graduated from high school, he went to a technical
college in Kansas City, Mo., and earned his associate degree in
electronic technology. From there, he was hired by an established
avionics company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he programmed
PC boards. While he was in Cedar Rapids, Jensen returned to
college and earned his bachelor’s degree in business.
In 1990, Jensen moved to Melbourne, Fla., for his job, where
he provided support as a systems engineer for the company’s
proprietary avionics systems and HF radios. He served as a
liaison between the engineers and customers, and a year later,
he was assigned to work on the satcom systems in aircraft. “At
the time, I didn’t even know what satcom meant,” Jensen said.
It was during this time that Jensen noticed a great market
potential.
“I realized the problems customers were having weren’t the customer’s fault, and it wasn’t the company’s fault,” he said. “The fault
was there was no single service provider. So I set out to provide a
global, seamless service to airplanes around the world.”
