The board of trustees of the AVIATION ACCREDITATION BOARD
INTERNATIONAL recently announced the selection of DR. GARY
NORTHAM to the position of president effective in the next academic year.
Northam succeeds GARY KITELEY, who has announced his retirement but
will remain as president emeritus for the foreseeable future.
“I could not be happier that Dr. Northam has been selected as the next
president of AABI,” said DR. PAUL CRAIG, AABI chairperson. “Northam brings
the perspective of the AABI/CAA past, the knowledge of our present and the
leadership for our future. He is an expert in aviation and in accreditation – he is
the best of both worlds, and I look forward to working with him for years to come.”
With a B.A. and M.Th. in religion, and a Ph.D. in adult education, Northam
started his teaching career at Palo Alto College in 1989, teaching all of the flight
ground courses that led to his promotion to chair of the technologies department.
Northam joined the faculty of Parks College in 1995, to chair the department
of aviation sciences and lead the professional pilot program. In 2004, he
was appointed the coordinator of the graduate program in aviation safety
management. From Parks, he went to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in
Prescott, Ariz., to chair the safety science department as a full professor. In 2010,
he was appointed dean of the college of aviation.
Northam has been actively involved with AABI for several years, serving as
a visiting team member and team chair for 16 years, and developed and taught
team training workshops. As chair of the ad hoc Graduate Criteria Committee, he
guided the work of the committee in the development of graduate criteria, which
were first published in 2012.
Northam has authored an extensive list of publications and serves on the
editorial board of the Collegiate Aviation Review. He holds FAA commercial,
single- and multi-engine, CFI-instrument and ground instructor advanced and
instrument.
AABI, the only Council on Higher Education Accreditation-recognized
specialized accrediting body for collegiate aviation programs, is comprised
of colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad. Major airlines, aircraft
manufacturers, college educators and administrators, the public-at-large, trade
associations, aviation practitioners, regulators and other diverse members
comprise the organization and give of their time voluntarily to assure the quality
of collegiate aviation programs. Colleges must apply for accreditation, undergo
complete program reviews, author a comprehensive self-study and undergo
the scrutiny of peer-review and board of trustees evaluation prior to attaining
accreditation status.

• Standard arrival charts.
• Aerodrome obstacle charts.
• Ground movement charts.
• Waypoint lists.
• Control area charts.
• ATC surveillance minimum altitude charts.
According to the company, Aspen’s exceptionally
crisp, clear display technology, coupled with Seattle
Avionics’ advanced software, provides users with
an intuitive and safety-enhancing tool that will
make flying with the Aspen Evolution an even
better experience.
Existing customers flying N-registered aircraft in
Europe fall under Aspen’s FAA AML-STC and most
likely meet the minimum software requirement
to install European charts. Owners flying EASAregistered aircraft are encouraged to contact their
installer for more information on the upgrade path.
Seattle Avionics is developing country- and
region-specific coverages that will give customers
additional affordable options. Aspen’s ChartData
software comes standard on all Evolution MFDs,
and subscription updates are available from
Seattle Avionics Software.
