new avionics standards, what’s going on behind the scenes
at the Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies
as they develop new regulations, or the expectations for
and timing of a worldwide economic recovery?
But the program didn’t stop there. Scholarships valued
at more than $125,000 were awarded to avionics and
aviation maintenance students. Other ways in which the
AEA gave back to the industry it leads included naming
a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, plus member
and associate member of the year awards. Some 27
companies made detailed presentations on their newest
products. Meanwhile, manufacturers like Garmin,
Avidyne, FreeFlight Systems, ICG, Aspen Avionics,
Sandel, Trig, Flight Display Systems, PS Engineering and
Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics – to name just a
handful – presented in-depth seminars on their products,
how to install them and how to troubleshoot problems.
And there was news, including the new product
announcements (see the article beginning on page 38

for all the details). Most notably, the AEA announced
completing its year-long effort to quantify the size,
scope and impact of the worldwide avionics industry.
The result is the first AEA Avionics Market Report,
representing the collective sales figures – of both newmanufacture and retrofit installations – for year-end 2012
sales, among the 20 participating manufacturers. As we
detail below, the new report is the first of its kind, but it
won’t be the last.
If you attended this year’s AEA International
Convention & Trade Show, even for only an afternoon,
you know how valuable the event can be. If you didn’t
attend, it’s too late to participate in the professional
networking opportunities available at social events like
the First-Nighter Party, the Awards Luncheon, and the
Farewell Reception or on the exhibit hall floor. But
it’s not too late to take advantage of the event: Many
