occasion to advance oneself.”
Green Mountain Avionics –
Middlebury, Vt.
Bill Hanf started his avionics career
with the U.S. Marine Corps in 1990.
After six years of service, he worked
on Citation jets at the Long Beach,
Calif., Cessna service center and, a
decade later, at its Newburg, N.Y., facility. Visiting his Vermont hometown
on weekends, the “drives back to New
York didn’t feel right,” Hanf said.
Managing the avionics shop at Burlington’s Heritage Aviation felt better, and starting his own shop, Green
Mountain Avionics, two years ago was
just right. With the economy, “people
asked if I was crazy,” Hanf said, but
he saw a need in an area “that I could
be successful.”
Hanf sublet space in a friend’s hangar at Middlebury State Airport, which
is home to a maintenance, paint and
interior shop. Its 2,500-foot runway
serves 32 based aircraft, including five
twins, two jets and a helicopter. Centrally located, the airport gives Hanf
easy access to small airports across
Vermont, western New Hampshire and
the Adirondacks in New York. Most
don’t have any avionics services, he
said, just a mechanic with an inspection authorization, and he serves all
who need his skills.
Attending Small Business Administration workshops was his first
step. Guided by a business plan and
financial forecasting templates, he
researched the market data smallbusiness loan officers would need,
from aircraft demographics and cost of
services provided to a profitable return on them. Earning his loans, Hanf
invested in “high-end” test equipment

that covers everything through RVSM
and ADS-B. To get around in good
weather, he bought a Cessna 172 that
he’s equipping as a demonstrator.
Gregarious and easy going, Hanf
connects with people immediately,
and he’s built a multitude of professional relationships. “I had my repair
station certified inside of six months,”
and several months later was in the
original equipment manufacturers’
dealership queues. Growing ever busier, he hired a full-time avionics technician last year. He’s thinking now of
his own facility, but “right now, nothing seems to be available.”
Given the risks, rewards and re-

sponsibilities of starting a business,
an understanding and supportive
spouse is essential. His wife, and “being an active member of the Aircraft
Electronics Association gave me the
courage to do this,” Hanf said. It introduced him to shop owners who shared
their expertise. Without this organization, “who knows where I’d be today.”
Coming up on the shop’s second
anniversary, Hanf said in hindsight
that there was nothing he would do
differently. When he looks back, he
sees “the things I’m glad I did… due
diligence, market research… I made
