Flightline Group –
Tallahassee, Fla.
A diversified company with services ranging from maintenance and
management to sales and service, the
Flightline Group was founded at the
Tallahassee Regional Airport in 1982.
It recently added HondaJet to its Piper
and GippsAero GA8 sales operations,
and being a repair station was one of
its dealership requirements, according
to Bob Van Riper, vice president.
Because it offered the greatest opportunity, “we decided to start with avionics and grow from there,” he said. Not
only will it enable Flightline to better

serve its customers, which include state
aircraft based at Tallahassee, the company can increase the value of the used
aircraft it takes in by upgrading them to
21st century avionics.
A retired Navy helicopter pilot and
maintenance officer with an aviation
maintenance management degree
from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University, Van Riper is a 15-year
Flightline veteran. As the “accountable manager,” he said starting a repair station is no small investment. It
began with “Ric Peri’s repair station
course at AEA headquarters; having
the AEA as a resource has been great.
“We did our due diligence, got
templates for documents and visited
other repair stations to learn how they

got certified and how they operate.”
Hiring a full-time avionics tech, Joe
Volker, and test equipment followed.
Based on available information, Flightline planned on six to 12
months for FAA certification. It’s
been almost two, according to Van
Riper. The FAA finally assigned inspectors last November, and “once we
got started, they have been excellent.”
Van Riper hoped to have the certificate in late May, he said.
Beyond repeated phone calls,
there’s little any company can do to
accelerate the FAA. “The process is
never as quick as you would hope,”
Van Riper said. And with any opportunity, there are variables beyond the
control of those who pursue them. q
