But you are making a commitment, and you’ll have to carve
time away from your family and your shop. Potentially, you
may do more than simply put your name on some Little League
baseball jerseys. You should be motivated by the cause. The
desire to help should come first, because any recognition and
exposure will take time to brew. “Make it something you’re
passionate about,” Stengel said.
It’s up to you whether or not you start as an individual or as
a local business; however, the former allows you to get to know
an organization without offering your brand’s tacit endorsement.
Once you’re satisfied that your personal efforts create results,
you can take the next step. Either way, Stengel recommended
getting started sooner than later. According to an Ernst & Young
survey, 89 percent of entrepreneurs donate money, both personally and through their companies, and 62 percent said giving
back made their companies more successful in the long run.
“You’re seeing the correlation between successful small businesses and giving back,” she said.
JUST CAUSES
Nevertheless, stay strategic in what you support. If your goal
is to promote your business, match your passion to those of
your customers. These include not only aircraft owners, but also
your local stakeholders, such as employees and vendors. This
should still give you plenty latitude in where you participate; in
fact, your hardest task may be deciding on the organizations that
receive your support.
Pilots, for example, may respond enthusiastically to your
support for projects like the Experimental Aircraft Association’s
Young Eagles program, which pairs kids with chapters for
first-flight experiences, or to Pilots N Paws, which transfers
rescued pets to no-kill animal shelters and adoptive families.
You might even gather free market intelligence about these
customers’ needs at the same time. Similarly, working with
schools, chambers of commerce, food banks and other organizations establishes your shop (and airport) as a valuable local
resource. In between, both groups might support Angel Flight,
