which arranges no-cost flights for medical treatment, or science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education
for high school students.
Once you pick a cause, determine how you will contribute.
If you’re volunteering, become the go-to person. You may find
yourself staffing an airport pancake breakfast to send a student
to an aviation summer camp, or coordinating the team that
spends a sunny afternoon picking up trash along a frontage
road, or even serving on a chamber subcommittee organizing a
holiday festival.
While it wouldn’t hurt to shoot for ways to match your
gifts and talents to the organization’s need, you don’t have to.
Sometimes, being a “gofer” is a nice break from being the boss,
and the point is to step up and lend a hand. Once you do, don’t
be surprised when you find yourself running a committee or
serving on a board.
If donations are more your speed, recognize they take several
forms, too. The most obvious is cash contributions to organizations, events or emergency funds. But a creative twist on this

is donating profits to your favorite charity. You can also donate
raffle prizes for events, or offer the use of your hangar for a dinner or as monthly meeting space.
Don’t forget your experience in business and technology is
valuable, too. Schools, Junior Achievement and youth groups
need mentors. Career-day programs, extracurricular electronics
clubs and scouting troops require businesses to host field trips,
workshops and shadow experiences. If nothing else, consider
establishing a scholarship for a local student attending an avionics technology program.
Regardless of the tactic and organization you support, perform due diligence and vet programs just as you would any
other partnership. Look at the organization’s track record,
efficiency and strategy, review its IRS Form 990s, website and
annual reports, and talk to other volunteers and donors. All will
give you an image of the group’s objectives and accomplishments, and how it uses its resources.
TEAM EFFORTS
Giving back starts at the top with you. But it also must trickle
down to everyone else to be a genuine company-wide effort. Not
only will you boost your project’s success by getting employees,
