Can You Explain How it Will Affect Your Customers?

arring any unforeseen detours or delays, to operate
in U.S. airspace that now requires a transponder, aircraft must be
equipped with an automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast system by
Jan. 1, 2020. Focusing on this deadline,
the Federal Aviation Administration’s
ADS-B website recommends that aircraft owners “check with your avionics
shop for more details,” explaining that
they “can provide you with options
tailored to your individual operational
and economic needs, so make sure you
include them in your decision process.”

Association members nationwide revealed a fundamental understanding
of the operational requirements for
ADS-B Out. Like a Mode C transponder,
they explained, ADS-B Out relays the
aircraft’s position to air traffic control
and similarly equipped aircraft within a
15-mile radius. Most shops didn’t stop
there. The position broadcast includes
the aircraft type, velocity and geometric altitude; all supplied by a WAAS
(wide area augmentation system) GPS.
ADS-B does not replace transponders,
and those whose customers fly at 18,000
feet and higher usually explained why.
An ADS-B Out position report does not

provide the resolution of the Traffic Alert
and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS),
whose requirements remain. This is one
reason why high-flying aircraft must be
equipped with a 1090 Extended Squitter transponder, which the International
Civil Aviation Organization set as the international standard.
Aircraft that fly below 18,000 feet,
most said, could use a 987 megahertz
Universal Access Transceiver, which
broadcasts the required Out position
and has the bandwidth to receive ADSB In services. A few shops were foggy
on these incoming services, traffic
information (TIS-B) and its free flight
