magine opening a business and seeing it grow
immediately, tripling your sales in just one year –
all without a lengthy startup time or waiting around
for customers or struggling to pay the bills. Oh, and do
it in an economy that’s still rebounding from a global
economic meltdown. That’s exactly what avionics
technician Janson Finkbeiner did.
In 2011, the founder and owner of South Carolina
Avionics Services opened a small avionics shop,
providing on-site services for companies and corporate
customers who lacked the manpower to handle larger
projects.
Two years later, Finkbeiner is scheduling work for
single-engine pistons and twin-engine turbines in
back-to-back time slots in his two shops, and providing
mobile services on location wherever customers need
him. To keep up with demand, he recently added another
3,200 square feet of space next door to his original
2,000-square-foot facility located at Orangeburg
Municipal Airport.
Situated about halfway between Columbia and
Charleston, roughly an hour each direction, Finkbeiner
and his crew have expanded services to include avionics

installation and repair, airframe and powerplant
maintenance, and aircraft maintenance management.
“We have found a way to grow a very successful
business in a weak economy,” said Finkbeiner, who
has more than 15 years of avionics and maintenance
experience on corporate and general aviation aircraft.
“It has been humbling to watch many other shops close
their doors across the nation.”
Learning Along the Way
Finkbeiner grew up in north central Pennsylvania
outside of Williamsport, the original home of Piper
and Lycoming. In the mid-1990s, he lived in Wrocław,
Poland, as a Rotary International high school foreign
exchange student.
“In Poland, I was surrounded by some talented, selfmade businessmen who built very successful businesses
after the Berlin Wall fell,” Finkbeiner said. “This gave
me tremendous motivation after I returned to the states.
Shortly after I returned, I went to Spartan School of
Aeronautics where I earned an associate degree and my
A&P certificate.
“After graduation, I worked as a mechanic at a local
