WHAT THEY DO:
South Carolina Avionics Services offers avionics
installation and repair, airframe and powerplant
maintenance, and aircraft maintenance management
for single-engine pistons and twin-engine turbines.

In addition to providing service at his two shops, Janson Finkbeiner,
founder of South Carolina Avionics Services, offers mobile services
via his well-stocked van filled with tooling and test equipment.
FBO. Three weeks later, the entire avionics shop, with
the exception of the avionics manager, left for another
company. I was asked if I could install avionics; I said
that I would love to learn. This started my career in
avionics and maintenance.”
Finkbeiner later served as a line maintenance
technician and avionics technician for Florida’s
Embry-Riddle flight department, while also earning his
bachelor’s degree in aviation management.
“I was honored to be one of three technicians to
retrofit Embry-Riddle’s fleet with first-generation
ADS-B equipment,” he said. “Embry-Riddle was the
second testbed for the equipment after the Capstone
Project in Alaska. It was a two-year project with lots of
exciting test flights.”
After eight years at Eagle Aviation in Columbia,
S.C., serving in a variety of roles, including avionics
installer, lead installer, crew chief and avionics shop
supervisor, Finkbeiner left the company and started his
own business.
“When I left Eagle, I was considering leaving
aviation,” he said. “But that’s when I realized, this is
what I do, and I do it well.”
Taking Care of Everyone
So why has this little shop grown so quickly in
such a short period of time? Part of it may be due to
Finkbeiner’s all-inclusive approach to business. While
South Carolina Avionics Services does provide services
for larger aircraft, owner-operators with smaller aircraft
are very much welcome at the service center, too.
“I hear many customers complain that they feel
like a hindrance when they arrive in their Cessna 172
at some companies – the ones that primarily service
larger aircraft in search of the larger profit margin,”
Finkbeiner said. “Larger profit margins are great, but
that is not how a solid reputation is built.
