Nechtman said that new-generation offerings will grow
to a place where you will not only have the aircraft’s most
current data available to you, but you will also be able to
quickly access specific direction on what maintenance activity needs to be taken to fix the problem – often even
before the aircraft’s CMC has alerted the problem even exists.
“Ultimately, we’re aiming to enable our customers to
have the right maintenance personnel, the right equipment
and the right spares ready for that aircraft when it lands
so they can expedite the repair as quickly as possible,” he
said. “The more help we can give operators in increasing
their dispatch rates, the better they can succeed. That’s the
level of service we are after.”
What’s Not to Love?
With all the benefits they bring to aircraft operators and

maintainers, it seems there are nothing but blue skies ahead
for tablet app services and capabilities providers.
“What we’ve seen are that iPads are becoming prevalent
throughout our industry,” Heine said. “Pilots love them for
moving maps, weather displays, flight planning and all sorts
of other uses. Now, more and more operators are using them
for improving their maintenance practices.
“There are just too many benefits not to. I see maintenance
teams greatly reducing the amount of paper they use to print
job cards and forms. You have the ability to upload any information you want from component maintenance manuals,
to general maintenance manuals, to database updates – all on
one compact tablet. And when you use it to do electronic logbook entries, you never again have to worry about misplacing
or losing logs or information. It’s all automatically backed up
and available, should you need it.”
Perhaps the only downside to switching to iPad-based
maintenance is the upfront cost. And considering all the efficiency and time savings you are going to realize during the
life of each unit, it’s a very small price to pay. q
