certified avionics, too, but can be
a real problem when working with
noncertified avionics.
Meanwhile, avionics designed
and marketed for E-ABs can offer
capabilities far ahead of those that
haven’t yet made it through the
certification process. Those capabilities make E-ABs generally and
noncertified avionics specifically
very attractive to pilots and potential builders.
“I do like the experimental systems because sometimes they’re an
easy sell for us: ‘Hey, you can get
the same picture for a quarter of the
money,’” he said. “We’re going to
charge the same amount as when
we work on a certified aircraft since
we’re spending the same amount of
time.”

underutilized avionics shop might
want to consider expanding its market
into serving E-ABs: The basic tasks
are identical and should be valued at
the same rate regardless of whether the
aircraft is experimental or certified.
Yes, there are differences between
the two markets, but understanding
them mostly demands some flexibility
in how the avionics shop approaches
marketing to E-AB builders. Using its
experience in planning and installing
complicated avionics to provide similar services to homebuilders should
not be much of stretch.
And in the current economy, expanding into the market for experimentals may be the only quick, easy
and relatively painless way to sell its
unused capacity. Paraphrasing Watergate’s “Deep Throat,” maybe it’s time
to follow the growth? q
