lives outside of work. Post pictures of them around the shop
participating in their favorite off-duty activities. In addition
to happy hours, include the children and spouses, too, with
things like trips to a sporting event. Reward hard work with a
gift card for a date night, home-cleaning service or pet sitting.
Most importantly, interact; ask (legal and friendly) questions
about employees’ outside lives. You might learn something
important, and they’ll notice you care.
Demonstrate how you’re balancing your various demands,
too. This is the first step in walking the walk, and if you don’t
want your employees working late every night, you need to
leave on time. Explain your life priorities, and discuss your
goals for achieving those priorities.
As soon as practical, create a formal policy using best
practices to avoid haphazardly applying decisions. Hold
supervisors accountable for managing their balance and that
of their employees. Keep the ball rolling with coaching and
mentoring for your leaders, and provide workplace fatigue
and human factors training for everyone; these account for
about 80 percent of maintenance mistakes, according to
the Federal Aviation Administration. Look into employeeassistance plans; they not only offer courses, but also
counseling for employees who need a steadying hand.
2. Manage your work time. Workplace efficiency benefits
everyone, so start by tracking your time for a week or two. Pay
special attention to the things you do that don’t enhance your
job performance. On a personal level, this can include fiveminute checks of social media, stock quotes or email that add
up when you do them every hour. If you need a break, make it
a useful one: stretch, walk and get a breath of fresh air.
Next, consider your workday interruptions. Keep meetings
short, efficient and populated only by people who benefit; in
fact, their outcome needs to justify the high cost in resources
they incur, especially when an email might work better.
