5. Manage your technology.
Your technicians can’t take a King
Air home at night to “catch up” on
work, so reconsider whether the rest
of your staff also needs to extend
their day. This is about boundaries.
Calls and emails during family
time or vacation aggravate many
employees and their families just as
much as it would you if they took a
family call during a client meeting.
For technology to make you
more effective, you must manage it
properly. The first step is rejecting
the myth of multitasking. There’s
no such thing; actually, you’re
performing “rapid toggling between
tasks.” And for each toggle, there’s
a resulting lag. There also is a
performance cost. In a recent study,
subjects who were repeatedly
interrupted during a test scored
20 percent lower than controlled
subjects who weren’t. Multitasking,
then, is literally a dumb idea.
To fix this, create tech-free times.
Identify and schedule periods where
you won’t answer the phone, check
email or return texts. Make sure
your colleagues, employees and
family respects those periods so
they don’t try to connect unless the
hangar is on fire. Establish ground
rules with your team about when it’s
appropriate to make that call. Justify
it as a matter of focusing your
time and attention. Again, lead the
balance conversation.
