“Our aviation programs are
clustered so that students all take the
same first semester and a common half
of the second semester,” Laurie said.
“This allows students to stream into
maintenance, structures or avionics
programs and, if desired, to transfer
between programs. Graduates are able
to obtain advanced entry into the other
programs.”
Expanding the Program
The school’s new aviation program,
which began in 2010, has drawn 81

students to learn aircraft maintenance
and structures.
“Our program has doubled in size
in two years, and our growth plan
is to achieve overall steady state
enrollments of 300 students in the
technician programs,” Laurie said.
“We are always well oversubscribed
and need to wait list applicants.”
The new aviation program’s early
success means there’s more to come.
Mohawk College plans to expand the
aviation school, launching a dedicated
avionics program in 2015, as well as
a flight school in the next few years.
“We are in the process of creating
an avionics-specific, two-year, post-
secondary diploma program clustered
with our maintenance program,”
Laurie said. “Students will have the
option to obtain both credentials.”
Facing the Challenges
Preparing the next generation of
aviation technicians comes with
several challenges, starting with
ensuring students have the basic
math and science skills they need to
progress through the program.
“The
increasing
technologies
require math and physics skills found
lacking in our high school graduates,”
Laurie said. “We spend too much
valuable time needing to remediate
students with insufficient math skills.
This is an endemic for all technology
programs.”
Other
challenges
include
anticipating future technology and
acquiring expensive learning tools.
“The increasing use of newer
technologies in aerospace requires
that we equip our students to be
future-ready,” Laurie said. “During
their careers, they will need to
become trained on technologies
that may not even exist yet, and for
aerospace vehicles that have not yet
been designed.”
Fortunately, the aviation industry
and local businesses have helped
equip the aviation program with
donated aircraft and electronics.
“Accommodations
and
lab
equipment are all very expensive, and
funding is always a concern,” Laurie
said. “Partnerships and donations from
industry are critical to our operations.”
Canada’s vast size makes it difficult
to track employment rates, but Laurie
estimated about 70 percent of his
aviation students are hired by the
industry after graduation. Mohawk
College does offer scholarships and
helps students with job placement. q
