“They also use them for risk assessment tools, performance calculation, flight planning and looking up maps.”
Picture This
Whether you sell a product or a service, the iPad makes it easy
to show customers what they’re getting. You can create and play
sales presentations, pull up product specifications, and show off
mock-ups of paint schemes and interior modifications.
“Our account executives use iPads on customer visits to display
product information and specifications,” said Matt Peters, who
manages marketing for Daniels Manufacturing of Orlando, Fla.,
which makes aviation and aerospace tools. “They also show training videos and presentations, mainly because they are lighter and
smaller than laptops.”
Need to share what’s on your iPad screen with a larger audience? Simply connect it to a television, monitor, projector or LCD
display that has a VGA connector. Portability makes iPads perfect
for conventions and trade shows. You can easily move from
large-scale media presentations to one-on-one conversations with
customers at the booth.
“Our sales and marketing staff use iPads at trade shows to
provide information for conversations with booth visitors,” said
Lori Johnson, marketing communications manager for Duncan
Aviation, which operates a network of aircraft service centers
across the U.S.
Quick pictures taken with the iPad’s camera help document
damage found during inspections and provide visual updates for
customers for ongoing work.
“Our regional sales managers use them to show photos of
aircraft in work,” said Andrew Evans, director of marketing for
Elliott Aviation, which operates aircraft service centers in Minneapolis, Minn., Des Moines, Iowa, and Moline, Ill.
Quotes, Time Tracking, Invoicing
When you connect Apple’s wireless keyboard (sold separately)
to your iPad, you have something akin to a mini laptop for taking
notes, composing letters, placing and tracking orders, and inputting data.
“I do about 70 to 80 percent of all that I do on the iPad,” said
Janson Finkbeiner, owner of South Carolina Avionics Services, an
aircraft service center in Orangeburg, S.C. “I have all my manuals on it and all my email. I do all my quotes, all my spreadsheets
for quotes and all of my pictures for panel shots. I also have an
iPhone that does all the same things. I will be adding QuickBooks
for some of my invoicing, allowing my lead technician to do
invoicing while I am gone.”

accomplish many different tasks all in hand. It’s little brother, the
smaller, lighter iPhone, offers much of the same capabilities, just
without as much screen real estate.
“I use an iPhone to enter details of work performed when
on-site using Google docs,” said Michael Alder, licensed aircraft
maintenance engineer and owner of Skylight Avionics of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. “Requests for work come directly
to my phone, notebook and office computer from customers via
Google docs. I use my notebook for on-site configuration tools
and installation data when required. All of the above can also be
performed on an iPad.”
According to Sanchez, in the near future, Cutter Aviation’s
service department will use iPads to log progress on tasks.
Staying Connected
With the iPad, you can connect to your cloud-based storage or
back to your desktop computer for access to your documents and
data, even when you’re elbow-deep inside an aircraft engine.
“Email access at the aircraft is a useful communication tool to
stay in contact with vendors, customers, engineers and technical
assistance,” Cogley said.
Finkbeiner agreed. “Both of my lead technicians have iPads
and iPhones,” he said. “It is our main form of communication,
sharing emails, manuals and pictures.”
Aviation businesses are developing iPad and iPhone apps to
help customers find their company’s products and services quickly
and easily.
StandardAero’s new iOS app offers one-touch aircraft on
ground support, connecting customers directly to their mobile
support team dispatch office. While the customer talks with a representative, the app automatically sends an email with the aircraft
type, tail number and serial numbers, along with details about
warranty coverage.
Duncan Aviation offers a similar app that helps customers find
the closest facility or get in touch with an engine rapid response
field team.
“We are doing quite a bit as far as technology goes, including communication and project management apps for customers
and our project managers, parts inventory and AOG services,”
Johnson said.
Maps, Navigation
In addition to everything else, iPads can even help get you to
your next destination.
“It’s extremely valuable for road trips … plus, it has maps and
driving navigation,” Cogley said.
When you’re in unfamiliar territory, the iPad can show you
where the closest gas station is and where to get a bite to eat.
When I asked Siri, the iPad’s digital, voice-activated assistant,
“What’s for lunch?” She gave me five nearby restaurants – one
sandwich shop, a pizza place, two Tex-Mex locations and a barbecue spot. That’s a lot of power in your hands. Let’s eat. q
