How long have you been flying?

How does being a pilot impact your job?

I was lucky enough to be awarded the private pilot
scholarship from the AEA in 2010. I started lessons the
fall of 2010, and received my certificate in 2011. The
scholarship was for $3,500. My employer, Aerotronics, a
longtime AEA member, matched those funds. I had very
little out of pocket expense, and I’d suggest any employee
of an AEA member business looking to get their license
apply for this wonderful scholarship.

Currently, I’m the manager of the experimental division of
Aerotronics; we design and build custom plug-and-play avionics suites for homebuilt aircraft. I design the panels based on
talking to the customer and getting an idea of his needs and
desires, along with knowing what interfaces well together. I
have noticed how being a pilot now affects the way I look at
a particular design and how I make suggestions to customers.
I look at my designs with a new perspective, try to put myself
in their airplane and explain some of the subtleties of the design influenced by my experience. The biggest difference I feel
is the credibility with these other pilots. Prior to having my
license, on many occasions while explaining the capabilities
of an avionics design and how it all works, I’d be asked, “Wow,
you know a lot about this stuff, how long have you been flying?” I felt like the credibility I’d built explaining the avionics
was lost. If you don’t use this stuff yourself, how can you expect others to listen to your advice?

What aircraft do you fly?

I did all my training in a Cessna 172 and currently have
about 85 hours in this model. My company has a 182 that I
fly. I’ve had the opportunity to fly a variety of experimental
aircraft, including the Glastar, Sportsman, Lancair IV-P,
Glasair III and the most beautiful scratch-built Stearman.
What is your favorite aircraft to fly?

Since the 182 is the only aircraft I have available to fly
regularly, I guess it would be that. I’m currently building an
experimental Sonex and really looking forward to flying it.
When did you know you wanted to become a pilot?

It was at a very early age. I was building and flying
radio controlled planes and helicopters starting at about
age 10. I would always look up and wish I could be flying
the real thing. I joined the Air Force out of high school
in order to be closer and get exposure to aircraft. After
the Air Force, I started working for Aerotronics and was
introduced to experimental, amateur-built planes. This
opened my eyes to this type of flying and the idea that
this might just be in my reach. But raising a young family
kept this just out of my reach financially for a number of
years. With the boost given by the AEA and Aerotronics, I
was able to achieve a lifelong goal.

As a pilot, what are your thoughts on ADS-B?

I am very excited by the ever-expanding areas and capabilities of the ADS-B system. As a longtime pilot, one of the
biggest apprehensions I’ve had is situational awareness of
other aircraft. Any system that can provide additional awareness to a pilot is a bonus. Add weather radar, AIRMETS/
SIGMETS, TFRs and all of the other benefits that ADS-B will
provide, and I think this is one of the largest contributions to
aviation safety since GPS. 
