Tell me about
your job at ICG.
Being the marketing manager
for the company is a pretty
diverse job, as I handle our
advertising, public relations,
promotional events, branding and
trade shows – just about anything
that relates to our public image.
I also work very closely with
our sales team to develop sales
programs and promotions.

nternational Communications
Group Inc. of Newport News,
Va., is one of general aviation’s
leading companies in the development of aerospace communications
integration, automation and management systems. ICG’s products
provide seamless satellite-based
global voice and data telecommunications services for both flight
deck and cabin, and it provides next
generation communications systems
for a range of business, military, air
transport and aftermarket aircraft.
Recently, Patricia Luebke, Avionics
News contributor, spoke with Andrew
Mayfield, marketing manager for
ICG, to learn more about his work.

I’ve been here six years. I
started as a marketing assistant
reporting to the marketing manager and moved up the ladder
to sales coordinator, distribution
network manager and business
development, and now into the
marketing manager role. This job
was a good fit for me, as I also
got to see things from a sales and
business development point of
view before taking this position.

Tell me about your
background.

With...

I got involved in aviation in
high school. My father was a
private pilot, and his enthusiasm
surrounding aviation wore off
on me. I learned about EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University
in Daytona Beach, Fla., when I
decided to get a degree in being
a professional pilot. I earned

my private pilot certificate there,
but realized halfway through my
degree program that I enjoyed
the business side of aviation more
than the idea of flying as a career.
I changed my major and earned a
Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace studies. That degree focuses
on multiple aspects of aviation,
such as aeronautical science,
aviation business and marketing,
as well as communication and
humanities; I also received a minor
in meteorology.
After I graduated, I began working for Atlantic Southeast Airlines,
a Delta Connection, in one of their
field stations in Newport News,
Va. I was doing everything from
aircraft load agent and office work
to auditing and invoicing, as well
as training new employees. I later
saw the posting for a marketing
position at ICG, and it was a great
opportunity to apply my degree to
my career. The rest is history.

What do you like best
about your job?

I have the ability to chart my
own path, develop ideas and run
with them. We’re encouraged to
think outside the box, to not just
show up and make reports and
spreadsheets and leave for the day.
We push to try new things, and it’s
an exciting atmosphere.

Describe the corporate
culture at ICG.

It’s a family-type atmosphere.
We have 80 employees between
our headquarters in Newport
