Universidad del Este’s main campus in Puerto Rico covers 21 acres. The
private, nonprofit school was founded in 1949 as a junior college and
became a four-year institution in 1992.

Fewer airline routes into and out of the
island, and lack of funding for Puerto Rico’s
international airport has had ramifications for
businesses and the local economy.
“The biggest issue or challenge we are facing
in Puerto Rico is the economic problem,”
Carrasquillo said. “Being on an island, we
depend on the aviation industry to be connected
with the rest of the world. This situation has
impacted the airlines, mechanic and avionics
shops, aviation schools and our airport’s
operations. Despite this, aviation schools have
sufficient demand for students interested in
entering the field.”
In fact, the school is seeing more women
interested in the aviation program.
“Every day, more women want to be part of
the aviation industry,” Carrasquillo said. “In
general, women in Puerto Rico are more active,
adopting and assuming roles and jobs typically
done by men. But, in engineering, aviation and
some careers in science, men continue to be a
majority.”
For students who need a helping hand with
funding their avionics education, Universidad
del Este offers scholarships to those with a
3.5 grade point average or higher, as well as
provides assistance finding other financing
options through private and government
organizations. The university’s Innovation
Employment and Entrepreneurship Center
helps students in their job search, from resume
preparation to interview practice.
With the success of the avionics program,
Universidad del Este plans to add additional
programs during the next two years, creating a
well-rounded aviation school.
“Due to the growth and acceptance of this
program, we’ll begin offering a certificate
of ground instructor in 2014, an associate
degree in sport and private pilot in 2014, and a
bachelor’s degree in commercial pilot in 2015,”
Carrasquillo said. q
