resh out of high school, Brian Wilson joined the U.S. Navy, where it was his and
the industry’s good fortune to be slotted into an avionics technician career path.
After seven years of military service, he and his new bride, Jamie, moved to South
Florida, where Wilson began alternating between work as a bench specialist and line technician. During the next 20 years, his experience included a “Who’s Who” of South Florida
aviation companies, including Walkers Aviation, Midcoast Aviation, Raytheon, AMR Combs/
Learjet/Bombardier and Jet Aviation. Now, as director of avionics for Banyan Air Service in
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Wilson is in charge of all the company’s avionics activities, including
troubleshooting, bench repair, installations and engineering.
How did you get started in the avionics industry?
The story goes all the way back to my senior year in high school, when a close friend abruptly
joined the U.S. Navy. I was surprised he hadn’t said anything about it, but he pointed out they had
a buddy system I should check out. I did, and we enlisted together. We had played baseball and
football together – just having fun together – but never really thought about careers. This was in
1978, in Lebanon, Penn.
The Navy gave us an aptitude test, which came back indicating my friend’s mechanical skills
were very strong; he ended up being an A&P mechanic. The tests indicated my mechanical skills
weren’t as good, but my analytical and math skills were very strong. So they made me an avionics
technician.
I attended the Navy’s avionics training school in Millington, Tenn., as did other AEA directors
who were in the Navy. That school lasted 16 weeks, and they stationed me in Virginia Beach,
Va., where I did line troubleshooting on Douglas TA-4J Skyhawk trainers. After that tour, I was
transferred to Hawaii, where I learned to do component-level bench repairs. I was working on
the Lockheed P-3 Orion. I eventually went to sea aboard the USS Ranger, an aircraft carrier. I was
in the Navy seven years, mustering out in 1985.
What did civilian life have in store for you then?
At that time, I had been married right before I got out of the Navy. I met my wife, Jamie, in
Hawaii, and she came with me to San Diego where we were married. We didn’t know anyone in
San Diego, even though we loved the area. My parents had recently relocated from Pennsylvania
to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. So we took several weeks traveling to Florida, stopping to see the sights
along the way, before starting our new life in Ft. Lauderdale.
Did you have a job lined up in Ft. Lauderdale?
No; I knew there was a lot of aviation in South Florida, and the idea that I had three years
