of line troubleshooting and four years of bench troubleshooting
under my belt made me pretty confident that I could find something. It didn’t take long: The first job I saw in the paper and applied for, I got. That was with Walkers Aviation at Ft. Lauderdale
International.
What was your role there?
Joe Braddock, who ran the facility, had dedicated bench techs
and dedicated line techs. Once he saw I had a background in
both, he put me to work in the role he needed most at the time.
When we got overloaded on the bench, he pulled me in, which
I liked in the summertime because of the air conditioning. If we
got overloaded on the line, that’s where he put me. But that allowed me to learn a lot of aircraft and a lot of general aviation
aircraft systems.
We had about 10 dedicated avionics techs, but they were all
seasoned veterans, with 20-plus years of experience on average.
So I learned a lot from the folks I worked with.
I was there only about two years – it was a little bit of a challenge keeping 10 to 12 people busy. We had started supporting
some 727s operated by Amerijet International, which flew everything from fish to horses to cargo down to South America and
back. The thing with them is they liked to come in on Friday at 6
o’clock, do a C inspection and be out at 6 a.m. Monday morning.
As a younger person, working 12 to 16 hour days on the weekend, I thought I might see if there were other opportunities that
didn’t tie up all my free time.
But it was a great experience; I’m still friends with Mr. Braddock, who runs a very successful operation up the coast in
Melbourne, Fla.
Where did you end up?
I worked for a couple of small shops, but in 1989, the new jet
center opened, which was one of Midcoast Aviation’s first investments outside its base in St. Louis. Rather than hire people
individually, they sought and bought an individual interior shop
and an individual avionics shop. I became part of that operation,
once again working as a line tech or bench tech, depending on
demand.
It was the first time I really saw big aircraft undergoing heavy
maintenance. This was a time when a lot of Gulfstream IIs were
undergoing a wing de-mate procedure. They’d come in, the
