Ten years ago, I could “commute” from the AEA’s office
in Washington, D.C., to the international headquarters in
the Kansas City area for a single day and still be home in
the evening. Today, that is nearly impossible. The number
of direct flights has been drastically reduced, and most
flights now connect through a major hub, adding hours to
the commute.
I remember an article back in the late 1990s that did a
comparison between flying from Washington, D.C., to New
York versus taking the train. On a perfect day, flying won –
by about 10 minutes. I almost never fly from Washington,
D.C., to New York, as I prefer the train. The train station is
adjacent to Baltimore/Washington International Airport. I
arrive 15 minutes before my train, and it stops at just about
every major city between Washington, D.C., and New York;
there is no wasted time. Plus, every seat has a power plug and

Wi-Fi, so I can work the entire time without shutting down
for takeoff and landing.
The business traveler has had various “rules” when deciding to fly or drive. Back when there were 129 “startup”
airlines, you might drive if your business was less than 200
miles away but fly to anything of greater distance. Then, the
Transportation Security Administration’s airport security
was ramped up to where, by 2002, this “rule” was extended
to 300 miles. Nearly all of the airlines are flying “hub and
spoke” routes, even the discount carriers that traditionally
connected remote cities are flying modified hub and spoke
routes. Unless you are connecting to major metropolitan
areas, the old adage that “you can’t get there from here” has
never been more true than in today’s commercial airlines.
And now that those 129 startups are down to a dozen or so,
the distance is approaching 400 miles – the perfect distance
for general aviation travel.
