TAKING A STAND
Creating the manifesto starts with the
flickering of excitement at the prospects
of improving your shop and your industry – for changing the way customers
experience avionics services, for making
employment in aviation services more
fulfilling or for giving pilots the tools to
make their flying safer and more enjoyable. Each is a seed.
Indeed, the underlying purpose is to
transform thinking, working and serving,
but from there, you can write a general
manifesto that covers the entirety of your
shop’s operations or a more specific one
addressing customer service, innovation
or work-life balance. In all cases, ask
yourself what you aspire to be and what

frustrations you need to address, according to Karen Gunton, a business coach.
Spend some time brainstorming, and
consider what you value most above all
else, what inspires you and your business,
and what matters most. Evaluate what
makes you special, which stakeholders
you give value and the lessons you would
like to share that you have discovered the
hard way. Define, too, what you want
every employee in your shop focused
on and what you want for and from your
business that you would fight for every
day. For AIBA, “It is time to realign our
economic policies to benefit and grow the
real economic strength of our base – the
local businesses,” yet those businesses
also should “treat our customers and staff
like the valued friends they are.”
Chipotle believes “people are people,
too,” and “it’s important that every worker

is treated with dignity and respect.” At
Bruce Mau Design, innovation requires
thinkers to “begin anywhere” to avoid
decision paralysis and “ask stupid questions” to accelerate learning.
Thinking is the hard part. Writing the
manifesto itself should be fun. For that
matter, reading it can be, too.
While your mission statement is short
and sweet – it should roll off your tongue
– your manifesto is basically a story, and
you want to tell it to a broad audience
inside and outside your walls. It should be
conversational and genuine, but its tone
can be serious, witty, wise and passionate,
or whatever fits your shop’s personality.
It also should be affirmative, as in “We
believe…” State your opinions as fact,
and take a stand by using action-oriented
language. For AIBA, “We ask of ourselves that we become better businesses,”
