AARON HAUTER, senior engineer, advanced methods with L-3 Aviation
Products, credits college experience for professional advancement

sk anyone who teaches, and most will tell you that
classes develop a group personality. Throughout
the years, I’ve taught groups of students with personalities ranging from “D is for degree,” and yes, they
would actually say it out loud, to asking “Can I do more?”
In 1993, I had a class whose personality was a bit more
like the latter. This is when I met Aaron Hauter.
Aviation was a passion of Hauter’s since early childhood. “As long as I can remember, I have always had
a fascination with aircraft and the principles of flight,”
he said. “As a child growing up, I was fortunate to have
a next-door neighbor who also shared my interest. He
owned several fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and a hotair balloon. I can recall many times playing outside on
summer evenings when he would yell across the yard,
‘Hey, Aaron! Do you want to fly the balloon tonight?’ My
answer was always a resounding, ‘Of course.’ We would
assemble a chase crew and take off from his front lawn.
We never knew where we were going to end, but we knew
how we were going to get there.”
Hauter felt he was living in very exciting times, and
his experiences further cultivated an enthusiasm for aviation. Later, he would spend, as he said, “all of my free

time” volunteering at a local fixed base operator, where
he worked with the airframe and powerplant mechanics.
“I was an inquisitive youngster and enjoyed learning
how things worked,” Hauter said. “I could usually figure out what made mechanical assemblies tick; however,
aviation electronics confounded me.”
With a strong desire to unravel the mystery of electronics and aspirations to work in the aviation industry, Hauter
said, “I had the incentive and motivation to push forward
into a career in avionics.”
Many factors attracted Hauter to Lansing Community College in Lansing, Mich. He felt the aviation electronics curriculum was well-rounded and challenging. The program provided students with a good blend of practical hands-on work
with comprehensive theory of operation lectures. In this era
before the National Center for Aerospace & Transportation
Technologies, students at LCC were given the opportunity
to earn a Federal Communications Commission General Radiotelephone Operator license, which was a unique benefit
some other schools did not offer. Since the facility included
a Federal Aviation Administration certificated repair station,
students became well versed in the rules and regulations that
govern avionics repairs and installations.
