“The staff and faculty were top-notch,” Hauter said.
“Most of the academic team had many years of real-world
experience in the avionics field to create a vast knowledge base to draw upon.”
Course scheduling was another important factor for
him. Hauter worked full time during the day; evening
classes were required, and he found the school to be extremely accommodating. “I can remember leaving the
laboratory around 11 p.m. on more than one occasion,”
he said.
Not only was LCC a certified repair station, but it also
was a member of the Aircraft Electronics Association. The
advantages of LCC belonging to the AEA were prevalent
throughout Hauter’s time as a student. For example, many
students received scholarships from the AEA Educational
Foundation to offset the cost of tuition, and the AEA provided valuable insight to align the curriculum coursework
with the direction the avionics industry was taking.
“As students, we seemed to be ahead of the curve;
therefore, we had the opportunity to study some of the
latest avionics technologies available,” he said. The AEA
also assisted in job placement after graduation by conducting practice interviews and circulating open positions

from avionics shops abroad and around the country.
Personally, I remember Hauter as a student with a maturity level much higher than many students his age. As
a result of this maturity, he was earning respect and success at his day job. I felt a bit of disappointment upon his
graduation in 1995, because even though he had the tools
for success in aviation, he decided to stay with the company that already employed him. Although not related to
the aviation field, he had a well-established career and
did not see an immediate change on the horizon. However, five years after graduating, in November 2000, he
decided it was time to start a profession in avionics.
“The aviation electronics degree was finally put to
good use, as I started my avionics career with L-3, an
AEA member company, in January 2001,” he said. “I
immediately found a kinship with the team and felt our
mission to provide products that are designed to enhance
flight safety and improve situational awareness to be incredibly rewarding.”
Hauter’s career at L-3 has been diverse, and he has
found all the challenges to be quite interesting.
