L-3 Aviation Products Scholarship

Kavik Fairburn of Garden Valley, Idaho, is currently enrolled in the aviation maintenance technology program at the Idaho State University
College of Technology. After graduation,
Fairburn plans to find employment in the Forest
Service’s firefighting aircraft and field maintenance in Alaska, Utah or Idaho.
Fairburn was born in a small village west of Fairbanks,
Alaska, called Holy Cross. His first modes of transportation
were a small bush plane and dog sled.

Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics Scholarship

Michael Karol Gortowski of Macomb, Mich.,
has always had a passion for the field of aviation. His first interest in manual, mechanical and electrical work developed when he
was a child, when he would watch his father
dismantle things and put them back into a
working state.
Gortowski is currently enrolled at Western Michigan
University and is working toward a bachelor’s degree in
aviation maintenance technology with a minor in business
management. He also works part time at the college of
aviation to obtain hands-on experience and network.

Rockwell Collins Scholarship

Lee Tarbox Memorial Scholarship,
Sponsored by Pacific Southwest Instruments

Cody Michael Wright of Ridgeway, Va.,
attended Ferrum College where he majored
in environmental planning and development.
He will be pursing an aviation electronics
technology degree from Guilford Technical
Community College.

Leon Harris/Les Nichols Memorial Scholarship to
Spartan College of Aeronautics & Technology

Michael Morgan Huber of Tyler, Texas,
is an Eagle Scout and a member of the
National Eagle Scout Association. He has
spent countless hours as a volunteer at the
Salvation Army.
Huber plans to attend Spartan College of
Aeronautics and Technology’s associate of applied science
in avionics maintenance technology program. He is currently an apprentice at First Line Aero in Jacksonville, Texas,
and is in the process of earning his private pilot’s license.

Nathan Spotts of Wauseon, Ohio, plans to
attend the Michigan Institute of Aviation
and Technology to pursue a degree in aviation maintenance. Spotts has been building
and flying remote-controlled airplanes for
many years. His passion for flight took him
to his local airport to take flying lessons, and he earned his
pilot’s license in late 2012.
In addition to his passion for flight, Spotts spends his
free time in band, choir, the Future Farmers of America
and is active in his church.

Southeast Aerospace Scholarship

Alexis Rety of East Elmhurst, N.Y., will
attend the Vaughn College of Aeronautics
and Technology. He plans to obtain a
Bachelor of Science degree in aviation
maintenance management in three years.
After Rety completes an internship with
Delta Airlines maintenance at JFK International Airport,
he hopes to be hired by Delta Airlines as an aircraft maintenance technician.

Lowell Gaylor Memorial Scholarship

Codie M. Keough of Windham, Ohio., is
pursuing his aviation maintenance technology degree at the Pittsburgh Institute of
Aeronautics. Keough found his drive for
mechanics at the age of 16, when his parents
bought him a less than roadworthy car. He
was told that he must learn how to fix a car if he wished to
own a car. At PIA, he recently tore down and completely
reassembled a Lycoming GSO-480 engine.

J. Brian Jay of Whitehall, Ohio, has a long history in the aviation field. He began in the U.S.
Marine Corps in 1983, as an aviation electrical
technician. He has 25 years of avionics experience in Columbus, Ohio, from beginning
as an avionics installer with Capital Aircraft
Electronics in 1988, to his current position as manager of
quality assurance, senior avionics estimator with Spirit
Avionics. With flight training, he will become more knowledgeable with the in-flight aspects of avionics systems and
be more valuable in the business growth of Spirit Avionics.
