CAPABILITY,
ADS-B OUT & IN
To get the entire picture for your aircraft, a package that includes
ADS-B Out is needed, because the Out signal triggers responses from
other nearby aircraft - rather than seeing only what already comes directly and via ground stations.
While a customer may be comfortable with a non-TSO'd Out system
for now - in order to get a more-complete ADS-B In traffic picture - by
the Dec. 31, 2020, deadline, a TSO'd system will be needed. Such TSO'd
systems are already available, including the NavWorx ADS600-B.
The TSO-authorized ADS600-B covers the entire spectrum of ADS-B
options in a single box. The device broadcasts ADS-B Out information and receives ADS-B In information including ADS-B, ADS-R and
TIS-B traffic and FIS-B weather. With multiple interfaces provided, the
ADS600-B supports a variety of panel-mounted EFIS, MFD and portable
displays.
Certified to TSO-C154c for ADS-B Out and TSO-C145c for the integral Accord Technology GPS position sensor, the NavWorx ADS600-B
meets the FAA's 2020 mandate for ADS-B equipage in all aircraft operating in U.S. airspace where a transponder is now required. An external
TSO-approved GPS can be used in lieu of the Accord Technology GPS.
Options for the ADS600-B include an ARINC 429 interface allowing
connectivity to devices like the Garmin GNS 530/430, not supported by
Garmin or other ADS-B devices. A Wi-Fi adapter allows wireless connectivity to iPad applications.
Other options are available with different feature sets - and more
are on the horizon and will be debuting in the coming year at the AEA
International Convention & Trade Show and the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In this
spring.
ADD-ON OPTIONS
Opportunities exist to add value to the purchase of a portable or permanent ADS-B In receiver - even if purchased from a non-shop competitor. Consider suggesting any of the following ideas.
Advise the owner to consider an ADS-B In solution now that works
with a portable display, which could also drive a future panel-mounted
display. While a panel-mounted display is not required to meet the ADSB Out mandate, some form of display is needed for ADS-B In to work at
all; no display, no graphics of traffic or weather.
Can a sensor for ADS-B In be conveniently wired to an existing panel
display, such as a GPS display or MFD? How about a portable GPS'
color display? Some ADS-B In receivers enjoy the ability to use both
wired and wireless connections - some at the same time.
Can the accessory receiver be mounted and wired to allow removal
and use with a different display solution - perhaps through a Bluetooth
connection to a tablet? Renter pilots and pilots at some flight-instruction
institutions may fly different aircraft on different days, while wishing
they could use their same system in all the different aircraft they fly.
Can your customer's tablet be given a stable mount in the customer's
cockpit? Some mounting systems go in the panel itself and provide a
stable platform for using the owner's preferred software. q
