Brian McMillan of

What are your
responsibilities at
Shadin Avionics?
My title is director of engineering
and programs. I have the engineering group responsibility, and the
program managers report to me.
We're small so there's some overlap; I have two managers, a systems
manager and a software manager.

hadin Avionics is one of the
global leaders for innovative
avionics solutions for military,
commercial, business and general aviation. Shadin Avionics' fuel flow systems,
engine trend monitors, air data computers, encoders, flight data components,
data converters and analog adapters
are all designed to meet the demanding
requirements of the latest generation of
aircraft, while enabling the upgrade and
sustainability of the existing fleet.
Recently, Patricia Luebke, Avionics
News contributor, spoke with Brian
McMillan, director of engineering and
programs, to learn more about his work
and life outside the office.

With...

I started as a contractor with
Shadin's previous ownership.
I moved to Minnesota from
Connecticut and got the job
through an agency. My wife got
transferred, and I was the trailing
spouse. I was a contractor from
November 1997 to March 1998,
and then was hired as an engineer
with hardware responsibility. The
engineering manager was a software person, so I had qualification
for hardware.

Are you from
Connecticut?
No, I'm from Wyoming, but I was
in Connecticut to work for Pratt
& Whitney - actually for United
Technologies. I was at Hamilton
Standard for nine years and three
years at Pratt & Whitney. I was
hired there right out of college.
I went to the University of

Wyoming, where I lived the first 22
years of my life. I was a math and
science person. English was not my
strong subject, so I chose electrical
engineering. In those days, there
was a computer option and an electrical option. The electrical intrigued
me. I committed to that as a freshman and didn't change. Later, while
working for United Technologies,
I went to graduate school and
earned an MBA from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute.

What's a typical
day for you?
I'm the FAA liaison, and
my FAA counterpart keeps
the same hours as I do, so
we talk early in the morning. At 9 a.m., there's typically a meeting of some sort
- leadership, sales and production, management. Then
it's various project-related
work and talking to program
managers. We have a weekly program review meeting
where we go through the
status of all open projects.
We run the gamut. Since
we're small, I could end up
troubleshooting parts or
working on proposals with
business development.
