Battery Chemistries in Aviation

While the Lithium Batteries 101 sessions cover both
bases nicely, it's the public-service/safe-handling aspect that
tops Winter's commitment to the 11 sessions planned for
this year.
And along the way, it's likely that many participating in
these 60- to 90-minute seminars will come to understand
how all batteries have strengths and weaknesses - and come
to appreciate the benefits and distinct handling needs of the
technology True Blue Power is pioneering in its two new
main-ship aircraft batteries, the TB44 and TB17.
Care, Feeding, Handling
Different traits, differing chemistries, and varying care
and handling needs underpin the many differences highlighted during the seminars, Winter and Slater stressed.
"Not all lithium chemistries are created equal," explained Slater.
The Lithium Batteries 101 sessions will include a comparison of two types of lithium-ion chemistries: metal
oxide and iron phosphate. It will introduce participants to

	
  	
  

general information on the care, feeding and handling of
lithium-ion batteries, plus specifics on pertinent regulatory issues, and relevant handling-safety practices - put
together by True Blue Power.
Various specifics on periodic maintenance and test and
data on the performance abilities of these new-chemistry
batteries also is a part of the program.
For example, True Blue Power's new batteries can be
exhausted and then safely recharged significantly faster
than current aircraft batteries.
Aside from biennial capacity checks, the new Nanophosphate Lithium-ion batteries generally require no
maintenance; the individual cells that make up a battery
are self-contained, sealed and need no servicing of the
type technicians are familiar with in some lead-acid and
nickel-cadmium batteries.
