A
s ADS-B mandated deadlines from the Federal
Aviation Administration, the European Aviation
Safety Agency and other regulatory agencies
draw near, conversations in hangars, avionics shops and
industry conferences routinely turn to the challenge of
equipping aircraft. A group of 53 engineers, avionics
experts, technicians, assemblers and support staff at
FreeFlight Systems in Texas is working hard to ensure
ADS-B products are, and will be, available.
The Waco, Texas-based company designs and
manufactures a variety of avionics systems, including
ADS-B, radar altimeters, WAAS and GPS sensors, and
flight management systems, for all aircraft types. All of
the systems have one thing in common - they're focused

on flight safety, designed to reap the advantages and
benefits of the NextGen airspace.
As anyone in the industry can attest, the road to
NextGen nirvana has been a bumpy ride. In the lead-up,
aircraft operators have chosen to stand back, watch and
wait, but that may be changing.
"We're seeing a sharp uptick in ADS-B adoption," said
Jessica Power, director of marketing and sales. "A few of
the aviation organizations representing aircraft operators
have yet to take strong positions in favor of adoption.
So we're seeing ADS-B equipage as being grassrootsdriven, from the ramp up, so to speak. We've embraced
the regulatory environment by working closely with the
process of developing technical and airspace requirements.
We certainly understand the frustrations that can arise, but
we're inclined to take a practical, can-do attitude, focusing
on shared values in the safety and growth of aviation."
Making ADS-B a reality
FreeFlight Systems was founded in 2001 with the
acquisition of Trimble Navigation's avionics products
division. It pioneered the first certified aviation WAAS
GPS receiver and the first rule-compliant universal
