Tim Casey

was	limited	to	trade	show	booths,	hotels	and	restaurants.	
In	fact,	Casey	apparently	has	not	gotten	enough	trade	
shows	under	his	belt,	as	he	hopes	to	return	to	EAA	
AirVenture	and	Sun	'n	Fun	to	walk	the	show	as	"a	
tourist	and	be	able	to	visit	friends	-	and	if	Paula	(Derks)	
and	Debbie	(McFarland)	will	let	me	in,	I'd	like	to	go	to	
an	AEA	convention	-	also	as	a	tourist,"	he	joked.
His	plans	for	retirement	are,	first	and	foremost,	to	
take	good	care	of	his	wife,	Sharon,	who	has	had	some	
health	challenges.	
"Her	therapy	is	fairly	promising	to	give	her	more	
mobility	and	make	it	easier	for	us	to	do	what	we	really	
want	to	do	-	travel	and	see	people,"	he	said.
According	to	Casey,	he	looks	forward	to	the	freedom	
of	picking	up	and	going	when	and	where	he	and	his	wife	
want.	Travel	plans	include	revisiting	Mount	Rushmore	
and	Yellowstone	National	Park,	as	well	as	getting	to	
some	places	where	he	didn't	have	the	opportunity	to	
explore.
As	for	the	colleagues	he	leaves	behind,	Carl	Wolf,	
Garmin's	vice	president	of	aviation	marketing	and	sales,	
said,	"From	the	day	Tim	started	work	at	Garmin,	he	
dedicated	himself	to	growing	our	business	and	creating	
a	world-class	network	of	dealers	and	talented	sales	team	
to	serve	them.	For	many	years,	Tim	has	been	the	face	of	
Garmin's	aviation	business	-	everyone	knows	him.	Tim	
has	fun	every	day,	and	you	can't	help	but	laugh	along	with	
him	as	he	tells	stories	about	his	experiences.	Tim	will	be	
missed	by	all	of	us	who	had	the	privilege	to	work	with	him	
day	in	and	day	out.	I	thank	him	for	his	dedicated	services	
to	Garmin,	our	dealers	and	our	customers	-	and	I	hope	he	
swings	by	to	see	us	from	time	to	time."

To	explain	his	success	at	Garmin,	Casey	said,	"I've	
been	told	that	my	enthusiasm	and	love	for	the	job,	
the	Garmin	work	ethic	and	corporate	culture	was	so	
well	aligned	with	what	the	company	should	be,	and	a	
reflection	of	what	Gary	and	Min	wanted	going	forward.	
Both	Gary	and	Min	were	open	and	generous	with	their	
corporate	and	product	vision.	
"I	truly	care	about	people	and	have	had	the	great	
opportunity	to	be	surrounded	by	them	at	Garmin.	When	
I	go	to	a	meeting,	I	am	rarely	the	smartest	guy	in	the	
room."	
Casey	also	appreciated	the	respect	for	marketing	he	
found	at	Garmin.	
"The	worst	reason	to	invent	a	product	is	because	
you	can,"	he	said.	"You	can	have	the	neatest	piece	of	
equipment	and	pat	yourself	on	the	back	for	it,	but	it	
will	sit	on	the	back	shelf	and	collect	dust	until	someone	
wants	it."	
As	fun	as	retirement	seems,	Casey	said	he'll	miss	
the	people	the	most,	especially	the	associates	and	
customers.	He	often	told	new	salespeople	they	were	
going	"to	work	their	rear	end	off	for	two	years"	meeting	
everyone	in	the	field.	Once	that's	accomplished	and	you	
build	relationships,	he	told	them	they'd	spend	their	time	
visiting	friends.	
Casey	remains	grateful	for	all	the	opportunities	he	had	
at	Garmin	and	said,	"I	was	blessed	by	the	association	
with	Garmin	and	the	avionics	industry.	It's	like	a	small	
family	in	a	small	town.	I	was	blessed	to	get	into	Garmin,	
and	I	didn't	even	have	to	move!"	 q
