Protecting your customers
and your business
Experts suggest using common
sense to deter criminals. Use cameras,
lights, including motion-sensor lights,
and an electronic security system,
if possible. Establish a watchful and
attentive community, and encourage
everyone to report suspicious behavior.
Ask questions, and lots of them.
Make sure anyone on the tarmac, in
a hangar or hanging out in an FBO,
has a legitimate reason to be there.
Don't overlook well-dressed thieves.
Wearing a suit and carrying a flight
bag makes it easy for them to blend in
and look like they belong.
"All of those items would certainly
be helpful as a deterrent, as well
as making it appear that security is
present 24/7," Collins said. "Post signs
on the property and notices on the
airport website."
Thieves often look for the easiest
targets. Ensure your business and
its surroundings appear uninviting
to someone who doesn't want to be
noticed.
"The local law enforcement official
who spoke to our neighborhood watch
group said that thieves will drive
around looking for houses without
alarm system signs, 'beware of dog'
signs, outside lighting, fences and
gates," Collins said. "They are looking
for the easiest target with the least
obstacles. It's the same for airports. It
makes sense that a thief would target
a location without security over one
that had security."
Protecting aircraft
and avionics
Security costs money. Owners
should consider whatever they can
reasonably afford, including choosing
a secure, well-lit airport, storing
aircraft in a locked hangar, and
investing in quality locks for aircraft
doors, according to Collins.
"Simple things such as locking the
doors and covering the panel might
also be helpful," she said. "A thief
would likely be in a hurry. An aircraft
with unlocked doors and a visible
valuable panel would appear to be a
quicker, easier target than unknown
equipment behind locked doors."
Also, consider installing an
anti-theft device or at least adding
stickers to the windows to imply
a security system is onboard. Ask
your technician to engrave the serial
number into the metal casing of
each unit.
