n the picturesque small town of Howell, Michigan,
Preferred Avionics & Instruments is celebrating 10
years in business. Based at the Livingston County
Airport, about an hour northwest of Detroit, the FAAcertified Part 145 repair station caters mostly to singleengine pistons and light twins. It serves customers

across the states of Michigan and Ohio, and even
nationwide with its off-site repair services.
Army veteran Christopher G. Turner founded the
company in 2004, operating at the Willow Run Airport
in Ypsilanti, just outside Detroit. After just five years,
Preferred Avionics, its name at the time, needed more
space. In 2009, Turner moved the business to its
current location.
"We've grown from one employee to eight," said
Randy Weller, manager of Preferred Avionics &
Instruments. "I think we've grown primarily because of
our reputation and ability to provide quality work, and
stand behind our service."
The repair station's technicians specialize in avionics
and instrument repairs, upgrades, overhauls, and
component-level troubleshooting, as well as RVSM
inspections and IFR/VFR recertifications.
In 2013, Preferred Avionics expanded its services,
adding the ability to service and overhaul instruments,
and changed its name to reflect the new capabilities.
The shop now holds ratings for Radio Class 1, 2, 3,
Limited Airframe, Limited Power Plant and Instrument
