In	addition	to	avionics	and	instrument	repairs	and	
installations,	the	shop	offers	laser	wire	marking,	and	
can	custom	design	and	cut	instrument	panels	and	
antenna	doublers	with	its	in-house	CNC	machine.	
Throughout	the	years,	the	company's	technicians	
have	had	the	privilege	of	working	with	interesting	
legacy	aircraft	and	avionics,	including	a	B-17	owned	
by	the	Yankee	Air	Museum	based	at	Willow	Run	
Airport.
"We've	supported	the	Yankee	Air	Force	over	the	
years,"	Weller	said.	"When	we	installed	a	Garmin	
Traffic	system	on	the	B-17	Yankee	Lady,	visitors	
continually	peered	through	the	fence	and	visited	our	
facility	just	to	get	a	look."
Looking to the future
Even	as	the	company	celebrates	its	10	years	of	
success,	the	shortage	of	qualified,	experienced	avionics	

technicians	continues	to	limit	growth.
"At	this	point,	we	are	seeking	experienced	
technicians,"	Weller	said.	"We	are	hoping	to	be	able	to	
hire	at	least	one	more	technician	this	year.	In	doing	so,	
that	would	enable	us	to	continue	in	steady	growth	and	
service	our	customers	in	a	timely	manner."
Finding	local	talent	is	even	harder.	Preferred	
Avionics	&	Instruments'	staff	includes	five	avionics	
technicians	and	two	instrument	technicians	who	
commute	from	cities	outside	of	Howell.	Most	drive	an	
hour	or	more	each	way.
As	2014	winds	down,	the	staff	is	content	to	mark	the	
repair	station's	10-year	anniversary	quietly,	reflecting	
simply	on	how	far	they've	come	in	the	last	decade.	
"I	believe	our	success	is	the	result	of	a	combination	
of	factors,"	Weller	said.	"We	provide	quality	service,	
stand	behind	our	work,	and	stay	on	the	forefront	of	
new	technology	to	improve	our	services.	We	invest	
in	the	tooling	and	the	personnel	necessary	to	expand	
our	capabilities	for	our	customers.	As	far	as	the	future	
goes,	we	plan	to	keep	doing	what	we	do	best."	q
