Of course, there are more types of equipment to
consider when creating a good "infotainment system"
than off-aircraft connectivity. There are a lot of options for
on-aircraft communications and entertainment today. How
about in-cabin Wi-Fi? And what about getting power to all
these devices?
There is an evolving list of players developing
products for large and small turbine and piston aircraft.
From streaming to plugging in your own, these sampling of
products highlight what's available in the piston and light
turbine infotainment market. But by no means is this all of the
available equipment.
Gogo Business Aviation's ATG 2000
Gogo Business Aviation's ATG 2000 unit is designed
to effectively and affordably provide Internet and voice
connectivity using the ground-based cellular telephone
network. "The ATG 2000 is essentially a new-generation
product that offers all the major benefits of upper-end systems
at a much lower cost," Wade said. "When connected to the
Gogo Biz in-flight Internet service, it delivers seamless
coverage across the continental U.S. and portions of Alaska
and Canada."
According to Wade, in most areas, the ATG 2000 would
deliver the upper-end of 3G speeds for Internet connectivity.
"It gives you a very satisfying mobile experience," he said.
"We've also structured our plans to make connectivity more
affordable for these smaller aircraft," Wade added. "With our
pay-as-you go plan, if you don't use the data option, you won't
be charged for it. Voice plans start at under $90 per month."
Wade explained that the ATG 2000 system includes two
small LRU units and a pair of smaller, 6-inch antennas that
mount on the underside of the aircraft. "We have increased the
number of our available STCs now, which makes it easier and
more affordable to install on a growing number of aircraft,"
he said. "Many of the installations can now be done as field
approvals. The barriers to getting these systems installed
continue to come down."

The AeroWave 100 has been created to be one of the
lowest-cost satellite systems available for smaller cabin
aircraft.

"The target market is cabin-class Cessnas through the light
jets like the Citation V," Zanino explained. "Because this
whole market is based on price-point, we've brought the price
down to basically $20,000 for our equipment, plus installation,
which varies by the aircraft type."
BendixKing also recently announced a special pricing
promotion that gets AeroWave owners a block of 3,000
minutes (50 hours) of connection time for a flat $1,999.
"Delivering real, usable Internet connectivity for less than
$40 per hour completely changes the market," Zanino said.
"Our customers asked for simplicity and affordability, and
we delivered."
Zanino also noted that at this special price point, the data
speeds are limited to 104 kilobits per second.
"The AeroWave 100 uses the Inmarsat satellite network,
which enables coverage throughout three primary areas:
North and South America, and the European and Asia/Pacific
regions," Zanino added. "In ideal situations, it will deliver
speeds up to 200 Kbps. But for the most part, it's closer to
150, which is the upper end of 3G speeds."
Along with a lower price, the AeroWave 100 hardware
is smaller. "It's basically one LRU box, and we've built the
power amplifier into the antenna, which itself is just slightly
bigger than a GPS antenna," Zanino said. "The LRU has a
standard RJ45 plug the owner can use to hook up a standard
Wi-Fi router or walk-on router depending on how the owner
wants to do it."
Zanino said owners can use an FAA-certified router, or if
it's a private Part 91 aircraft, they can go to an electronics store
and by a COTS router and use it.
