operations. It generates $12 billion in annual sales and
employs 38,000 in nearly 80 locations worldwide.
A look back
Honeywell Aerospace marked an
important milestone on June 18, 1914,
when Lawrence Sperry demonstrated
the first autopilot at a Paris air show.
Sperry and his mechanic walked onto
the wings of a single-engine Curtiss
C-2 biplane with no one at the controls,
showcasing the reliability of his
gyrostabilizer.
Along with the autopilot, Sperry
helped innovate other products, including the first
artificial horizon, one of the most important indictors in
the cockpit.
"Sperry's company later became part of Honeywell,

which through a mix of strategic acquisitions and
indigenous engineering, has played a leading role in
shaping how we fly ever since," wrote Bob Smith,
Honeywell Aerospace's chief technology
officer, in a tribute article.
Honeywell's online 100-year timeline
highlights Sperry's accomplishments and
those of other pioneering aviators and
legacy aviation companies.
According to the website, "The
Roaring 20s" were a glamorous age
for aviation, and Honeywell legacy
companies played critical roles in two of
the biggest achievements of the decade -
Charles Lindbergh's historic solo flight
across the Atlantic in 1927 and Jimmy Doolittle's first
instruments-only flight in 1929.
