Annual economic metrics, opportunities and challenges

ince 1980, when the Aircraft Electronics
Association introduced it, the annual
Rate & Labor Survey has provided the
metrics that allow AEA members to evaluate the
economic health of their businesses both nationally
and regionally. Throughout the decades, the averages
derived from respondent data
have tracked the waxing and
waning of the economy, and
they have shared what avionics
shops see as their opportunities
and challenges in the coming
year. For the third consecutive
year, the 2014 results show a growing percentage
of respondents expect their business to grow in the
coming year, and 85 percent of them say their greatest
challenge is finding qualified new-hire technicians to
execute the existing and anticipated work.
Each avionics repair station can participate in the
online survey, according to Mike Adamson, AEA's
vice president of member programs and education,

who manages the effort. Between June and August,
nearly 20 percent of avionics shops provided rate and
labor figures, benefit and compensation information,
and an experience profile of their technicians.
Of all respondents, 70 percent say ADS-B
installations to meet the Federal Aviation
Administration's 2020 deadline
are their primary avionics
opportunity. Avionics equipment
manufacturers supported this
outlook. If they haven't already,
most of them introduced their
ADS-B solutions at 2014's
major aviation gatherings such as EAA AirVenture in
Oshkosh, Wisconsin. ADS-B consumes one-third of
the business growth pie. Marketing takes a 14-percent
slice, followed by an improving economy, 11 percent,
new aircraft markets at 10 percent, and 9 percent who
are adding capabilities.
When it comes to business optimism in the U.S.,
11 points separate the west (64 percent) and the
