panel. Several models are
available, notably including a
recently introduced upgradable
version that can add additional
functionality over time.
For me and my partners, that's
a very interesting possibility
- it could actually pay for
itself after 20 years or so, by
eliminating vacuum-system
related maintenance issues, while
providing improved functionality
and dispatch reliability.
Aspen isn't the only company
addressing this market. For
example, R.C. Allen offers 2and 3-inch digital attitude gyros,
with optional battery backup, and
Sandel offers electronic attitude
and navigation displays for a very
wide range of applications.
As noted earlier, when an
operator arrives at the avionics
shop with a malfunction, it's
probably not the best time to
discuss upgrades (though it
can't hurt to plant a seed). So
when is a good time? During
routine maintenance, avionics
shops interact with owners
during biannual pitot-static and
transponder inspections, and this
would be a reasonable time to
ask the aircraft owner how long it
has been since the vacuum pump
was replaced, whether they've
experienced any operational
issues (like slow erection of a
mechanical attitude gyro, or
precession in a directional gyro)
and whether they've thought
about the possibility of an
upgrade. q
