signal strength we get here on the ramp, and we compare
that to what the customer gets," Cole said. "I think I have
more interference from ELT systems than anything else."
Touching on the frequencies and their harmonics that
can play havoc with the GPS signal, Cole said measuring
the interference and blocking with the ELT antenna in
different locations is one trial-and-error solution. "If there
are existing holes in the airplane, like an old Loran antenna,
it's worth a try to see if it works. If not, putting a notch filter
on the ELT is becoming big on the ones that don't pass the
interference test."
Where the antenna stands in the troubleshooting order
depends on the nature of the discrepancy. Sometimes it's
simple. "If the pilot says the comms are scratchy, I'll look
at the antennas," Cole said. "If they are so old you can see
the fiberglass, that can't be good, and the pilot needs a
new one." If only one of a pair of nav/comms is suffering a
problem, he'll swap the antenna cables behind the panel
and work from there.
When problems are especially vexing, Cole has the aircraft
owner demonstrate their circumstances so he can observe

all of the variables. One such problem only existed when
the newly installed factory remanufactured engine was
operating. Yes, even new magneto harnesses can be bad, he
said. Other times the problems are clear, like an unsecured
mag harness beating itself against the inside of the cowling,
or a transponder antenna amputated by the brush that
washed the airplane's belly.
When replacing an old radio with a new box, many aircraft
owners specify that it be connected to the existing antenna,
which is fine if it works up to specs. Before permanently
mounting an antenna for a new component, Cole runs a
complete operational test of the unit, and the units whose
antennas are close to the antenna he's about to install.
Cole's next challenge is installing an ADS-B Out system. A
UAT unit, its antenna will go on the belly of an airplane with a
Stormscope. "I need to avoid that antenna because the UAT
transmits once a second and the Stormscope will see that
as a lightning strike," he said. Working with the antenna real
estate available on each airplane and the original equipment
manufacturer's installation guidelines, "you do the best you
can and take the lesser of two evils." q
