asked the FAA to work with us on
streamlining approval processes.
As a result, in early November,
I was pleased to welcome to
AEA international headquarters,
Michael Whitaker, FAA deputy
administrator and chief NextGen
officer, and Earl Lawrence,
manager of the Small Airplane
Directorate. We spent an afternoon
discussing the certification and
installation approval challenges
our repair stations encounter. It
was impressive to witness their
willingness to work with us on
finding solutions. While Part 23
aircraft are generally covered by
AML STCs, we can do better. The
FAA has promised field approvals,
but getting that message out to
the various FSDOs is one of the
challenges.
The challenges are even
more significant for the Part
25 world. Technologies exist,
but the equipment is slow to
become available and there still
is a lack of service bulletins
for all of the aircraft. While the
ADS-B transponder may be a
simple installation, the interface
throughout the aircraft is more
complex. Part 25 operators are

slow to equip because of these
uncertainties.
As we approach a new year and
the mandate clock continues to
tick, you can be assured that one
of the AEA's primary resolutions
for 2015 will be the continued
representation of repair stations as
well as the avionics manufacturers
bringing ADS-B solutions to the
pilot community. In addition to
hosting a Part 25 ADS-B Summit at
AEA headquarters in late January
2015, we will continue throughout
the new year with ADS-B training
opportunities at the 58th annual AEA
International Convention & Trade
Show in Dallas, April 8-11, and at
the 2015 AEA Regional Meetings
around the world. You also will find
informational articles in the pages
of Avionics News, as well as timely
updates on regulatory processes.
This is one new year's
resolution that must be followed
through.
