coils aboard both the device and a base station, and placing them within a few millimeters of each other. The base
station is powered, and transfers energy to the device,
charging its battery. The enabling technology is available
as a sleeve or case accessory for many popular cellphones, and it's built into the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC
Droid DNA, and Nokia Lumia 920 models. Google's latest, the Nexus 5, also has the technology aboard.
In addition to eliminating the need for compatible
connectors, wireless charging also helps eliminate associated and unsightly cabling. For business aircraft
cabin designers, many things can distract from a cabin's
desired look and feel - no longer do power cords, and
accommodating them, have to be offenders. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration's recently
announced relaxation of prohibitions against in-flight
use of PEDs means airline passengers soon will demand
charging capabilities in the cabin. For airline managers
and regulators, a proliferation of power cords can be a
safety hazard looking for a solution.
Genesis
Mark Lange of Aviation Modification Leaders, which
he started in 2009, is a go-to expert for acquiring and
installing this technology aboard an aircraft. Lange
developed his industry expertise designing, engineering and certifying satellite communication
systems from Honeywell/AlliedSignal and Iridium. He
later worked for Midcoast Aviation, for Gulfstream and
as director of maintenance for Phoenix, Ariz.-based Swift
Aviation. Lange said his company's mantra is "solving
problems," and charging PEDs wirelessly is just one
more challenge he's met successfully.
"We've developed a lot of solutions and consulted on
others," mainly involving satcom systems aboard various
aircraft types, he said. One of AML's first products was
a video scaler, which resolved problems when displaying low-resolution composite video on high-definition
video screens. The scaler has been installed on a handful
of aircraft, including the Airbus A340 and the Gulfstream
G-V. The company also offers two Wi-Fi routers, both
with support for Inmarsat's Swift 64 and SwiftBroadband
satcom services. But it's the wireless charging product
Lange is focused on now.
Its internals are manufactured by Leggett & Platt,
which makes wireless charging products as original
equipment for vehicles from Jeep and Toyota. The company's Helios line of wireless power products covers mobile, commercial and residential applications, and is compatible with the Qi (pronounced "Chee") standard of the
Wireless Power Consortium, or WPC, which counts 140
