A

vionics News recently visited with James Buck, director of
ﬂight operations at Aspen Avionics, to learn more about his
experience as a pilot.

What is your favorite or most memorable moment as a pilot?

Several years ago as an active duty Marine pilot, there was a big
wildﬁre in San Diego, Calif.
Marine Corps Air Station Miramar had three squadrons of heavy-lift
Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters at their disposal. During an
extreme wildﬁre season, we oﬀered our services to San Diego County
to aid in combating the wildﬁres. Our primary military mission of heavy
lift/assault transport translated well to the civil ﬁre-ﬁghting mission. We
launched to Ramona Airport to meet with our U.S. Forest Service escort
to pick up 2,000 gallon Bambi Buckets and ﬂew north to Lake Wohlford,
which served as our water supply. Our mission was to assist groundbased ﬁre ﬁghters to extinguish hotspots as they tried to cut ﬁre breaks.
After several drops, we noticed a group of people on a nearby ridge waving at us, and a separate ﬁre was working its way toward their homes.
With permission from the U.S. Forest Service escort, we dropped
water onto the advancing ﬁre. After a few runs we extinguished the
ﬁre and returned to supporting the ground crew. Having ﬂown several
missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom, this stateside mission is my
most memorable because we got to use our military training to help
save homes in our own community.
