With the wide variety of antennas used by navigation systems,
it should come as no surprise the
DNS standard requires technicians
to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the antenna types in
use. Those studying for the examination should be aware of the differences and similarities between
antenna mounting systems on light
aircraft, business jets, transport category aircraft and military aircraft.
Technicians need to be familiar with
antenna installation, bonding, tuning and troubleshooting. At the very
least, technicians should be able to
differentiate between VOR, DME,
marker, GPS and ADF antennas.
It wouldn't hurt for technicians to
read a few antenna specification
sheets.
Of course, antennas need feed
lines. Therefore, like the RCS,
technicians need to be familiar with
coaxial and triaxial cables, and the
various types of connectors used in
the industry. Unlike the RCS, most
VHF navigation systems use diplexers and triplexers. The NCATT standard completes the antenna section
with a reference to Federal Aviation
Administration Advisory Circular
43.13-1B CHG 1, chapter 12.
Today, no aircraft seems complete without a GPS. For those
preparing for the DNS endorsement
exam, a good starting point is to
gain an understanding of the earth
coordinate system, along with the
concept of great circle navigation.
You should be familiar with GPS
theory of operation, including GPS
segments, almanacs and databases.

The DNS standard addresses safety in more general
terms than the RCS endorsement.
GPS comes with a whole bucket full
of abbreviations, and those wishing
to earn the endorsement will need to
be familiar with all of them.
Many aircraft capable of generating revenue for an avionics shop
will have more than a stand-alone
GPS; therefore, the DNS standards

require technicians to understand
how the system integrates with other
systems. The standard mentions
autopilots, FMS, INS, IRS, altimetry
systems, annunciators and displays.
