storage capabilities found in our new
cockpit display systems," Toy stated.
"We can fully integrate the HeliSure
capabilities in the systems without
requiring a lot of external boxes in
the installation."
Of course as an industry leader,
Rockwell Collins isn't ruling out
HeliSure as an aftermarket upgrade
down the road.
"We're looking at aftermarket opportunities, but it would have to be
part of a full cockpit upgrade, mainly
because of the memory and processing power needed by the high-resolution displays for TAWS and synthetic
vision," he said. "You'd also need
very high bandwidth capabilities to
handle real-time obstacle and hazard
sensors. Much of that technology just
lends itself to the capabilities found
in a modern cockpit system."
But, Toy stated, that doesn't mean
there is no hope for some select
elements of the HeliSure package
finding its way into a stand-alone
product offering.
"We are certainly looking at the
markets to see where the opportunities are," he said. "Right off, proximity obstacle alerting and our wire
and obstacle warning system are
candidates. We're trying to be a little more innovative as to how we do
that and areas where customers are
going, and then meet those needs."
Well if history is any indicator,
when it comes to helicopter operations, they are going everywhere.
And that means when it comes to
safety and situational awareness enhancement systems, they're going to
need everything they can get. q
