they will help you kick off relationships, especially when you encourage
current customers to bring a friend.
But it requires a unique approach,
too.
What all good events have in common is what Allison Saget, author
of The Event Marketing Handbook,
calls EventBLT: branding, lead
generation and thought leadership.
Your shop name is abundantly clear
through logoed napkins, signage and
employee shirts or lapel pins. But
through an event, you have a mechanism to gather leads and engage customer-evangelists, and you can offer
educational sessions that demonstrate
your expertise.
More practically, your event should
also include food, drink and entertainment. Tailor the details to make
it fun for your target audience based
on your imagination, budget and how
many people you want to invite. In
fact, think beyond the weekend hotdogs-and-soda gathering at your hangar; perhaps schedule it in the evening
and offer such options as a ballroom
dance night, presentations by aviation authors or speakers, or a comedy
night with local comedians. Smaller
events, whether they're on-site or offsite, could offer coffee tastings with
local roasters, sponsored networking
happy hours, or evenings at museums
or minor league baseball games.
Perhaps consider how you might
partner with a complementary business or vendor to jointly host an
event. Or piggyback your gathering
onto a convention, trade show or
regional fly-in that your customers
and prospects are likely to attend.
A strategic breakfast or after-dinner
event gives you time to interact with
customers who already have business
on their minds.
