operators currently lacking ADS-B
Out capability shows a "wait-andsee" attitude is prevalent.
But those operators biting the bullet on a potential five-digit avionics
installation are at least considering
ADS-B Out. When asked to estimate
how many of his customers were
seeking ADS-B Out installations,
Kirk Fryar, president of Sarasota
Avionics, said, "It's 75 percent. Part
of it is that my sales staff is selling
it as part of our marketing. Garmin
is really advertising it right now and
giving a rebate on it."
With that said, the extent to which
noncertified, portable ADS-B In solutions are limiting demand for ADS-B
Out installations is "huge," according
to Larry Anglisano. With more than
20 years of experience under his belt
working as an avionics installation
technician, he added, "It's simply
price and ease-of-installation driven. A small but growing percentage of operators are at least asking
for ADS-B Out advice. How many
actually pull the trigger? Maybe 10
percent. Portable gear still rules the
In market. This is price and tabletdriven, of course."
Fryar agreed, though his numbers
are slightly different. Of those customers buying or installing ADS-B
equipment, "I would say about 30
percent are installing both In and Out
solutions," he said.
Getting it over with
There's no question a lack of perceived benefit is one reason for operators' reluctance to adopt and install
ADS-B Out. It demands position
accuracy and data communication
capabilities that tried-and-true technologies like Mode C or S, and nonWAAS-enabled GPS, simply can't
provide without additional equipment

or modifications. And it all must
comply with specified technical standard orders and be certified, as existing IFR-qualified GPS navigator and
transponder installations are today.
In a depressed market, the simplest, cheapest way to get ADS-B Out
aboard your aircraft may be to purchase one with it already installed.
That's especially true since few manufacturers today publicly offer factory-installed ADS-B aboard new aircraft. While the number of in-service
aircraft equipped with ADS-B Out is
relatively small, it grows every day.
Regulatory hurdles don't seem to
be a problem with installing ADS-B

aboard in-service aircraft. "The ones
we have done are all STC'd, so we
haven't had any issues with FAA
approvals," Fryar said. Operators
wanting to install equipment lacking
an STC or approved model list can
find themselves in "hurry up and wait"
mode while the FAA's bureaucracy
works its magic, Anglisano added.
He also said most operators have
adopted a "wait-and-see" approach to
ADS-B Out upgrades. "On the other
hand, during major upgrades, operators seem to want to get it over with
and put the stuff in now," he allowed.
