on Campion was born in Jos, Nigeria, to two medical missionaries. His
father was a doctor and his mother a nurse. During his early years, he
was sent to a mission boarding school, where his interest in aviation
developed. He made the 500-mile trip to school in a general
aviation airplane. When it came time to name his FBO, he
wanted a name with an African ring, so he chose Banyan
after the trees found in that part of Africa.
When Campion graduated from high school,
he wasn't sure what he wanted to do. "I worked
for a humanitarian organization called World
Vision in the Sahara Desert for a year and a half,
delivering grain and digging wells for nomads,"
Don Campion
he said. "It was there that I cemented the idea
of pursuing aviation. I could see the usefulness of it - the difference
between flying in a small aircraft versus driving rough trails."
Once secure in his choice of aviation as a career, Campion moved
to Toronto to attend a four-year program at Seneca College. "You
finish the program with 250 hours of flight time, a multiengine and
instrument rating and a technical degree in applied science," he said.
"I wanted to be a pilot, but I wanted to be a pilot with an engineering
background."
With his parents still overseas, he moved to Fort Lauderdale to live
with a friend who was a flight instructor and salesperson. "He introduced me to
aviation in southern Florida, and I transferred my pilot's license to the U.S.,"
Campion said.
