Don Campion is the project leader for the volunteer effort to rebuild Egbe Hospital in rural Nigeria.
His first flying job was contract flying an Aztec for a Part
135 company to the Bahamas, where he saw an opportunity.
"I saw a lot of charter companies with two or three aircraft
that were owned by a pilot and struggled on the business
side, especially when it came to maintenance," Campion
explained. "Two or three aircraft did not justify a maintenance staff, so they would contract their maintenance and
often lose charters."
Campion approached his company and asked if he were to
rent a hangar, could he be responsible for the three airplanes'
maintenance? At the time, it had two 402s and an Aztec.
Much to his surprise, he was told to go ahead. That was in
1979, and it was the beginning of Banyan, which started to
attract other small companies that also needed maintenance.
Soon, he moved from small airplanes to turboprops.
In 1985, Banyan moved to a facility on the airport that
came with fueling rights. "That changed us into an FBO,"
Campion said.
It was here, too, that he started an alliance with Holland
Builders, parent company to the current chain called Sheltair.
Today, Holland Builders and Banyan Air Service occupy
1 million square feet of building space on the airport with
Banyan using 300,000 square feet and 700,000 for tenants.
When Banyan first arrived at Fort Lauderdale's Executive
Airport, there were eight FBOs operating - and Banyan
would be the ninth. People rightfully questioned how Banyan
could be successful. Campion, a glass half-full kind of guy,
thought that eight FBOs must mean there are lots of customers. "We don't focus on the competition, but rather on putting
together a team of people who like working together and
have a desire to be the best at what they do," he said.
