One Sheep, Two Sheep
sleeps less than six hours a night (a 10-fold increase from a generation ago); and six in 10 report experiencing sleep problems every
night. That's a lot of cranky people, and when you combine the costs
and effects of bad sleep, it looks like a big problem.
To beat our fatigue, we spend more than $1.6 billion a year on
sleeping medicine (about 60 million prescriptions worth), and we
drink an average of 70 gallons of coffee each - to the tune of about
$40 billion - not including other energy drinks, sodas and sugary
foods we ingest to stay awake. Sleep has even become something
of a cottage industry. Business hotels are hiring sleep consultants to
provide optimal experiences for their guests, and corporations are
increasingly investing in sleep-wellness training for their employees - out of necessity. According to a 2011 Harvard Medical School
study, sleep-deprived workers cost their companies an average of
11.3 days of productivity each year, at a tab of about $63 billion.
As an employer, this should cause you some concern. And so
should this: People who come to work tired have more problems
doing their jobs effectively - yet they're largely unaware of it - and
they engage in more conflict, social loafing and "presenteeism."
According to research by Singapore Management University, they
also waste an extra 8.4 minutes online for every hour of bad sleep
the night before.
More disconcerting, studies indicate weary investment bankers
report more physical and emotional illnesses, pilots experience significantly higher accident rates, and nurses express more regret in their
treatment decisions, more stress, and more dissatisfaction, which all
affect patient care. No business is immune. As James Maas, a former
Cornell University psychologist and author of "Sleep for Success"
told the Wall Street Journal, "If we treated machinery like we treat the
human body, there would be breakdowns all the time."
That's why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
considers sleep deprivation a public health epidemic. While
proper nutrition and exercise is often encouraged for healthier
lifestyles, sleep gets ignored, even though it's directly linked to
automobile accidents (injuring 40,000 people a year, and killing
another 1,500), occupational errors (think Chernobyl, the Exxon
Valdez oil tanker, and Space Shuttle Challenger), and chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, depression, obesity and cancer.

HOW TO GET
A BETTER
NIGHT'S SLEEP
To improve your sleep, consider these
tips from Loyola University Health System
and the Mayo Clinic.
* Reserve the bedroom. It's for
relaxation and sleep, not watching
television, working, playing games
or exercising.
* Have a routine. Go to bed at
the same time every night. If
you don't fall asleep within 15
minutes, get up and do something
relaxing until you're tired.
* Relax. Start quieting down at least
one hour before bedtime. Dim the
lights and turn off electronics 45
minutes before bed.
* Create a comfortable environment.
A cool room, darkness and silence
(or a sound machine) all help you
sleep, while a warm shower will
calm you and cause drowsiness.
* Go to the bathroom. Stop drinking
and eating two hours before bed to
prevent sleep interruptions. Avoid
alcohol; it may help you fall sleep,
but it also causes sleep disruptions.
* Read. Light content, such as novels
or entertainment magazines,
encourage bedtime relaxation.
* Write it down. Jot down worries,
future errands or anything else in a
notebook beside your bed to clear
your mind.
* Stick with the new routine.
Sleeping patterns won't change
overnight. Give it a few weeks to
acclimate your mind and body.
