European Aviation Safety Agency
The European Aviation Safety Agency has revised
its website and presented the new design to the public
in April. The website now includes information on the
additional responsibilities of the EASA. The new design
is much more user friendly and easier to navigate.

What is CPDLC?
RTCA (Radio Technical Commission
for Aeronautics)/EUROCAE (European
Organisation for Civil Aviation
Equipment)
New RTCA documents were recently issued, including DO-348, Safety, Performance and Interoperability
Requirements Document for TSSA (traffic situation
awareness with alerts).
This document defines and allocates the set of
minimum requirements for the end-to-end operational,
safety, performance, and interoperability aspects for
implementations of the TSAA application. The TSAA
application augments flight crew traffic situation
awareness by providing alerts of traffic detected in
conflict with the aircraft in support of the see-and-avoid
responsibility.
The TSAA application supports the out-the-window
visual acquisition of traffic through voice annunciations
of alerted traffic, visual cues and additional symbology
to supplement the plan-view depiction of traffic on a
traffic display, when equipped. Visual cues of nearby
airborne traffic are provided by the TSAA application
when equipped with a traffic display.
ANSWER:
CPDLC, or controller-pilot datalink communications, is an air/ground datalink application
operated at the Maastricht Upper Area Control
Centre, which enables the exchange of text
messages between controllers and pilots.
CPDLC complements traditional voice communications, providing pilots and controllers
with an additional communications medium.
The objective of CPDLC is to improve the
safety and efficiency of air traffic management.
The message types being exchanged include:
* Frequency changes.
* Climb/descent clearances.
* Direct clearances.
* Turns and headings.
* SSR instructions.
* Replies to aircrew requests.
* Microphone checks.
